Color With the arrival of the new year, we present several vibrant blue pieces reminiscent of New Year's fireworks for your enjoyment! As the excitement of the New Year fades, let us take time to center ourselves. After setting our goals for the year, we must advance steadily and with purpose. The self-portrait series is a highly valuable collection of Jo's work. From 1993 to 1999, Jo continuously documented her appearance and inner changes over six years. This series, showcasing a variety of styles and media, reveals the different facets of Jo as seen by her family, friends, classmates, and mentors. Around 1998, Jo was diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder. These works poignantly reflect the artist's internal struggles, pain, and contradictions during her episodes.

Lines: Infinity Our lives are like artworks created by thousands of choices, with each decision guiding us in a different direction. Each choice branches out into various lines, intricately interwoven. At the end, the nature of the work we present is entirely up to us, brimming with infinite possibilities. For Jo, blue is an exceptionally significant color—it represents stability, philosophy, and mystery, devoid of gaudiness yet profoundly enigmatic. Her Blue Abstract Series reflects her understanding of the qualities of blue. Lines: Boundary In life, we subtly draw many boundaries. Those who understand and respect these boundaries often become our most cherished friends. Although the boundaries between family and loved ones can sometimes be blurred, they still exist with their own limits. Once these boundaries are crossed, distinguishing between ourselves and others becomes difficult, and we lose our sense of self. The color blue holds a special significance for Jo; it is stable, philosophical, understated, yet profoundly mysterious. Her blue series reflects her deep understanding of the color's qualities. [Framework] We are born into a world full of predetermined frameworks, such as the Confucian and Daoist cultures of the Chinese tradition or the limitations we impose on ourselves. Jo's "Non-Space" guides us on how to navigate within these frameworks with the grace of a fish and the freedom of a bird—letting go and allowing our hearts to be at ease. She studied in London in 1991 and earned a Master's degree from the Royal College of Art in 1998. After settling in the UK, she returned to Taiwan in 2015 and continued her artistic endeavors until her passing in Taipei in September 2017.

This month, we have specially compiled works from the ink series. May you enjoy the time spent with loved ones during this special holiday.

In Jo's works, there is a series reminiscent of musical compositions. The lines and brushstrokes in these paintings transform into different rhythms, presenting a vitality and energy akin to music, full of boundless imagination. From these paintings, we can feel the charm of the dancing notes. In recent years, with the widespread use of computers and smartphones, people are spending less time putting pen to paper. It’s become even rarer to use a pen to capture the emotions of the moment. In Jo’s pencil series, we can see her admiration and carefree state of mind through the fluidity of her strokes. Though simplified and reduced to the most basic medium, these works brew a rich emotional energy. As we approach the Lunar New Year, I’m excited to share these with you for a slow and thoughtful appreciation. In this chaotic world, it is the light that allows us to walk forward with unwavering strength. Blue is a very special color to Jo. I have always felt that blue is a mysterious, unfathomable color that talks, transparent yet deep...I had mesmerized feelings while creating artwork with blue pigments.
